Add a boolean 'implib' kwarg to executable(). If true, it is permitted to
use the returned build target object in link_with:
On platforms where this makes sense (e.g. Windows), an implib is generated
for the executable and used when linking. Otherwise, it has no effect.
(Rather than checking if it is a StaticLibrary or SharedLibary, BuildTarget
subclasses gain the is_linkable_target method to test if they can appear in
link_with:)
Also install any executable implib in a similar way to a shared library
implib, i.e. placing the implib in the appropriate place
Add tests of:
- a shared_module containing a reference to a symbol which is known (at link
time) to be provided by the executable
- trying to link with non-implib executables (should fail)
- installing the implib
(This last one needs a little enhancement of the installed file checking as
this is the first install test we have which needs to work with either
MSVC-style or GCC-style implib filenames)
Commit 325a231a added stricter keyword argument checking, but didn't enable
keyword arguments for add_projects_link_arguments() and
add_global_link_arguments(). This makes them fail with this error:
Meson encountered an error in file meson.build, line 19, column 0:
Function does not take keyword arguments.
However, the language argument is required. Removing it produces this error
instead:
Meson encountered an error in file meson.build, line 19, column 0:
Missing language definition in add_project_link_arguments
Fix this by adding 'language' as a required keyword argument. Also add calls to
these in the "146 C and CPP link" test case.
Now we aggressively de-dup the list of libraries used while linking,
and when linking with GNU ld we have to enclose all static libraries
with -Wl,--start-group and -Wl,--end-group to force the linker to
resolve all symbols recursively. This is needed when static libraries
have circular deps on each other (see included test).
The --start/end-group change is also needed for circular dependencies
between static libraries because we no longer recursively list out all
library dependencies.
The size of build.ninja for GStreamer is now down to 6.1M from 20M,
and yields a net reduction in configuration time of 10%
We were doing this on the basis of an old comment, but there was no
test for it and I couldn't reproduce the issue with clang on Linux
at all.
Let's add a (somewhat comprehensive) test and see if it breaks
anywhere if we stop doing this.
Halves the size of gstreamer's build.ninja from 20M to 8.7M
Closes https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/issues/1057
Usage:
pkgconfig.generate(
...
description : 'A library with custom variables.',
variables : ['foo=bar', 'datadir=${prefix}/data']
)
The variables 'prefix', 'libdir' and 'includedir' are reserved, meson will
fail with an error message.
Variables can reference each other with the pkgconfig notation, e.g.
variables : ['datadir=${prefix}/data',
'otherdatadir=${datadir}/other']
meson does not check this for correctness or that the referenced variable
exists, we merely keep the same order as specified.
Refactor to use ExternalProgram for the command instead of duplicating
that code (badly). Also improve messages to say "or not executable"
when a script/command is not found.
Also allow ExternalPrograms to be passed as arguments to
run_command(). The only thing we're doing by preventing that is
forcing people to use prog.path()
